5th Graders Visit the Gardens & Apiary

On June 6, 2017, the Clarendon Hills Walker School 5th graders visited the Richmond Education Gardens to plant flowers and learn about the education gardens and apiary. This year Mr. Whitney from the Cook-DuPage Beekeepers Association talked to the students about honey bees and beekeeping. What a beautiful day!

Groundbreaking Celebration

The sun shone brightly on a crisp, clear Earth Day April 22, 2017, as Village of Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter and Village of Clarendon Hills Trustee Paul Flood dug in to plant "Seeds of Love" and officially open the Richmond Education Gardens and Apiary.

Led by Dan Ungerleider from Clarendon Hills and Jill Ziegler from Westmont, volunteers from both villages guided visitors about the proposed garden layout. Storytelling was provided by The Birches' residents with books from the Clarendon Hills library. Various booths were set up with information and activities from SCARCE (School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education), Cook-Dupage Beekeepers Association, Dupage Monarch Project, Morton Arboretum, Christy Webber Landscape, and the Conservation Design Forum. For the adults, the Clarendon Hills Starbucks provided hot coffee and for the kids, the ballon shapers worked their magic to create flowers, ladybugs, caterpillars, bees and bee stinger swords.

This early in the season, only the dandelions were in bloom, but fresh-cut daisies were provided to all attendees.
